Denise Garcia -
Living the Balanced Life
by Jodi DeVillier, Coast Construction
September 2009
Denise Garcia, Regional Account Executive with Marriott Execustay, considers herself fortunate to work in a business with “the most fabulous people you will ever meet”. That’s all of you she is talking about, adjusters and vendors who
work exclusively for insurance claims. She loves her job and is proud to be a part of the Marriott ExecuStay family.Entering the insurance industry in 1997, Denise has been in her current position for over 3 years.
To further serve those “fabulous people”, Denise has held the office of Secretary in 2006 and President in 2007 & 2008 for the Central Coast Claims Association. In addition, she was Committee Chair for this year’s Golf Tournament and is serving on this year’s board for CCNC. Furthermore, Denise is a member of the East Bay Claims Association and the Sacramento Claims Association. Needless to say, she keeps busy and gives selflessly of her time to organizations in her business. Going beyond that, Denise has a passion for an organization called Angel Flight West.
Garcia’s interest in Angel Flight came about when a terminally ill relative needed transportation for treatments. “Angel Flight West took Michelle to numerous treatments for an alternative medical procedure without judgment or questions about her choices,” she explained. Angel Flight West helps an array of people in times of need. Over the last 25 years, they have transported patients, organs, blood and disaster victims at the drop of a hat, without asking for a dime from the families or health care organizations. The pilots donate their time, their aircraft and the fuel. All money raised for the charity goes to organizational costs, which include coordinating flights and matching pilots with passengers for the nation wide organization.
This is where Denise comes in. For the last eight years, she has organized a Bowling Tournament for the CCCA and four years ago Angel Flight West became the beneficiary of the proceeds. Last year the tournament raised over $5,000.00 for Angel Flight West and this year’s tournament, coming up on October 8th, will no doubt match or top that amount. As a competitive bowler, Denise saw bowling as a means to help a worthwhile charity.
Starting her bowling career at an early age, Denise joined the Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour traveling throughout the country. Missing home and not enjoying the constant travel, Garcia has settled on local competitions that she enjoys with three other women she has been bowling with for 20 years. Together they bowl league and compete on weekends. “It’s different now that we’re older. Now, our main goal is to have fun. But make no mistake, we still want to win!” The CCCA Angel Flight bowling tournament became a way to combine two of her passions.
Denise loves to interact with people and is self-motivated by nature. She has the admirable ability to run her business as if it is her own. Handling all of California, Garcia does travel often. However, she enjoys seeing the state and staying in all the great Marriotts.
Born and raised in Cupertino, CA, Denise has never lived too far from home and currently resides in San Jose.“I love to travel, but there’s no place like home.” In addition to seeing the country while bowling, Garcia travels to Mexico as often as possible where she loves, “the weather, the water, the people, the margaritas - everything!”. She enjoys practicing her Spanish, which she is currently taking at West Valley College and says she will most likely be a “forever college student”.
A profile of Denise would not be complete without some mention of her 13-year-old Black Lab, “Shylo”. Clearly, a strong bond of love exists between the two. She woke up one day and said, “Shylo would be a great name for a dog,” and set out to find “Shylo”. She answered and ad in the paper and while all the puppies played, Denise called out the name and only one puppy looked up. “That’s my dog!”, she said.
Denise Garcia is a well-rounded, balanced individual. It’s something most of us strive to be, but obviously, Denise has become very accomplished at this. She is hard working, sports oriented, with a passion for giving back to community and business while forming lasting friendships that are as important as family.
